GMail down?

The last couple of days, Gmail seems to be down quite a bit.
Not complaining about my free 2.3 gb email account however.

If anyone wants a freebie gmail account, email me or comment below. I have about 150 to give away.

Indianapolis F1 Race? Posted by Hello

The fans respond, Part 1

We have received hundreds of responses to our request for your opinions about what happened at Indianapolis last weekend. The responses are published in the order they were received. Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect the views of grandprix.com.

While everyone points the finger of blame at each other, I think it's important to separate the questions of who caused the fiasco and who had the power to fix it. In this case it seems pretty clear that Max (Mosley) had the power to put in a chicane and save the day for the fans, sponsors and billions of TV viewers. So it is for this reason that the blame for the sham of a race should be placed at Max's feet. I made the mistake of attending the the Austrian race in 2002. After Ferrari's games there I left the TV off for the rest of the season. After the Indy fiasco, I may leave it off until 2008.

Room 39

I went to Room 39 last week for lunch.

IT WAS GREAT!
That said, no dinner and no wine...yet.
Hopefully, they will be able to get a wine license and open for dinner soon.

The atmosphere is casual, clean and elegant.
I only wish I went with more than one person so I could'v tried more on the menu.

Formula One

Alright, last weeks race in Indianapolis was crazy!
I think the FIA made the right decision in not changing the track.
Curve 13 has been there since 1909 and F1 has raced there for 6 years.
Michelin job is to provide tires to race on the track as it exists. It is not FIA's job to make a last minute change to a track that will help one manufacturer over another.
That said, it would've sucked to be there and only see six cars race.

Talk about a natural ad campaign for Bridgestone. I would use Michelin's quote that their tires are unsafe at speed.

Re:Verse Happy Hour

What a deal.
I met some friends on the Plaza for an adult beverage before the Royals game last night (they won!).
We went down to Re:Verse to have a few apps on and some vino.
Not knowing there was a happy hour, we ordered away.
What a deal!
1/2 price on app's and wine.
We had about 5 apps and some Cambria Chardonnay (yum!) for about $40.
Deal!

Free Gmail accounts

I know, I know...everyone has them.
I do have about 50 freebie accounts to give away if anyone wants one.
Toss me and email and I'll send you one or more.

Rebate!

In the mail today, I received my $50 rebate for my Brother color laser.
Cost to purchase is now $235 + tax!
For that, I can put up with the noise.

Printers - more

I ended up giving my 3200 to a friend who needed something for outgoing faxes (uses e-fax) and wanted a printer. His $500 inkjet (HP) was falling apart.
Mine still printed and seemed like a good short term fix for him.
While he was configuring it for him, he found my missing faxes in memory.
Ah Ha!
Interesting because no where that I could find on the HP forums was there any mention of this.

Printers and me

Well, my trusty (not so) hp 3200 died beyond my patience to live with it any longer.
While it continued to print, every once and awhile, it would stop receiving faxes (or so I thought).
The bummer with that is unless I know a fax is coming, I just miss it. Admittedly, emails have supplanted faxes, but I still receive 5-10 a month. It turns out that this is fairly common if you look on the HP support web site. The only cure is to download the firmware (done that) and to re-start the fax every week or so. There also is no error message when the fax is not received.

My last two printers were HP's that had suffered many and various problems and I was done with them. I started to do some research as I am prone to do and decided to just buy a cheap fax printer and get another laser for every day duty.

I settled on a Brother MFC 5840 which touts about 18 pages per minute. While it may achieve these speeds with one word on the page, 4-6 ppm is more realistic. The cool thing about this is that it has networking built in. All for $199 with $30 rebate (still not received).
The set up was very easy from both an XP and win 2000 machine.
The OCR works quite well although copying is excruciatingly slow.
I bought the more expensive version because it had a card reader built in - photo's are pretty crappy. I probably should have saved a few bucks and got the one without.

Later that week I went to Officedepot to UPS a package. The goal was to spend about $9.
On the clearance table, they had a new in sealed box Brother hl-2700 cn (four pass color laser) for $235! $599 on sale for $385, marked down another $100 on the table with a $50 rebate (still not received).
Too good a deal to pass up. For around $500, I know have two printers for less than my old HP 3200 cost me. The laser also had networking built in. I was in the market for a one pass with built in duplexing, but this was $235! One third less than the printer that I was looking at.
That said, man this thing is noisy! Color lasers also pull a lot of juice it makes the lights dim when using. It also only does 8x11. For know I am happy though. It sure beats going to Kinko's and dropping $1-$2 a page to do color.

Some Cafe Owners Pull the Plug on Lingering Wi-Fi Users

"But lately, the subject of Wi-Fi - specifically, the cafe's move to cut back on the free Wi-Fi connection it provides for patrons' Internet use - has been impossible to avoid. "It's distracting," said Jen Strongin, a co-owner."

Imagine that, some people are freeloaders.
Since getting my Treo 650, I tend to look less for free wifi.
Most Panera's have free wifi although the one on the Plaza shuts it off during the lunch time (can you blame them). The above subject has been making the rounds lately, I guess it's the latest media darling. One owner has a pretty good idea - no plugs in the dining area so the most you can stay online is a few hours.
Bottom line is that if you use someones free wifi, spend some money in the place!

Exotic Cars web site

For those of us that must live vicareously through others cars, this is a pretty cool web site.
If you spot an exotic (I have actually sent in a few from Leawood KS), you snap a pic and email it in with a brief description. The web site is updated several times a month.

Unused gift cards deliver $43 million to Home Depot

This is crazy that retailers can charge you for holding their gift cards.
Many retailers charge you a monthly fee after a few months if you do not use them.
This is insane.
Do not let this happen.

The nation's No. 2 retailer (NYSE: HD) recognized the gain from gift card "breakage" for the first time ever, in a quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Breakage is the balance remaining on gift cards that a retailer can claim when the cards expire, are lost or are unused for a lengthy period.

treo 650

I had a moto v600, which of course I could not wait to get. I had 5 in less than a year. Talk about problems! I ordered a 650 through att (not cingular) and received it about a week ago. I'll post more later, but I have to say that I love this thing. What's up with the stingy memory and no mp3 ringtones? Anyway, edge blows away gprs and one can actually surf the web from a mobile. I am actually posting from my Treo now. Ciao for now.

Yahooz

Went to Yahooz in Leawood last night for dinner.
Totally forgot that it was the weekend before Valentines Day.
Oops.
Anyway, we had reservations and after a small wait, got right in.
The service was quite friendly, one of the owners was walking around talking to and helping bus tables.
I think the kitchen was extremely concerned about getting behind, beacause the food flew out.
Not too quick (maybe a touch). I'm sure the speed of the kitchen helped keep the wait down though.
While a beautiful restaurant with high, beamed ceilings, it is oddly quiet no matter how busy.
Anyway, overall a very good experiance.

Mercedes CLS 500

I'm leaving lunch at Houlihans in Leawood and what do I happen to see?
That's right a Mercedes CLS 500!
In Kansas City of all places.
This car is a beauty.

Chicago Chow?

Ok, the presumption here is that someone will read this, but here goes.
I'm going to Chicago in a couple of weeks, staying downtown.
Tips on newer restaurants to eat at would be greatly appreciated.
I will be staying near the Four Seasons off Michicagn Avenue.

150 Free Gmail accounts

Go to this site and email these guys for a gmail account.
Google has been handing these out bit by bit, but now there is a flood.
Anyway, if you still don't have one, it's a pretty handy tool to use.

Treo still on the way!

Am I being selfish about wanting this right now? It's tough to be a good roll model for my daughter when I am just as needy (if not more so) than her.
IT has finally gotten around to configuring it to work with our servers so I should see it today or tomorrow.

Nick & Jakes and buffet brunch

Overall, I like these guys.
I tend to go to the one in Leawood on 135th.
The restaurants are always very clean and have very friendly staff.
I went their for brunch the other day.
They switched from a menu to a buffet brunch.
We went ahead and stayed due to company we were in.
However, we probably won't be back for the brunch.
As good as it looked, it's pretty pricey and I am not big on customers foraging through my food.

Treo 650 on the way!

I have wanted this one for a while now.
I have a Motorola v600 (which I also wanted).
It's a love hate with the Moto. I am on my 5th one so far. It seems to keep re-booting. Sometimes when in the middle of a call, sometimes not. Pretty annoying. ATTWS offered to give me a different phone, but wouldn't tell me which model. I'm not too hip on that.
Anyway, that will now be my back-up phone (love the sim card and gsm).
My Treo has been in someone's office for about a week.
I should have it later this week.
Finally, something that's not too big that I can use to take notes, keep my calendar and oh yeah, use as a phone.

More free gmail accounts

It seems like I am getting 8-12 email accounts a day to give away.
Rather that just posting the links here, just email me and I will send them out in the order that I receive them.

Ok, we've all seen various flash games.
Here are two that take things a little differently.

How far can you hit a penguin?

It's true. Make Stan work for you.

When will the GMail madness end?

Here are 4 more.
It seems as fast as I give them away, I get more.
Have I mentioned, please leave a comment?

Just take one Gmail account!

Hey, don't be rude. I know that it's nice to have more than one email account.
As you use you gmail, you will be given accounts to give away.
Don't take all the accounts.

I just posted 8 accounts in two postings.
I notified those on digg.com

One guy took FOUR!

Thanks to those that took just one.

Still more gmail accounts

However, I just got four more!

Exotic cars

I took the below prose from their web site. How cool is this for those of us that love cars. I have a few friends that I call when I see something cool. I will definitely be hanging out at this web site.
Click on the title to view their web site.

Welcome...

Too often exotic cars are viewed behind a plate-glass window or roped off at car shows. This tends to diminish their beauty.

The shock-value of an exotic is felt most when they are viewed on the streets, side-by-side with regular cars.

Unfortunately, spotting an exotic is a rare occurrence. That's why this site brings together hundreds of exotic sightings from all over the world. Enjoy the pics and please submit photos that you've taken.

Screensavers

For those that liked the old TSS and miss it so, it looks like the crew got together at MacWorld.
Even though the new tss is demasculated, it's nice to see projects continue and the people we thought we knew, Kevin, Pat, Leo et all, really were those people.
Listen to the audio, great stuff.

PB & J Revisited

Well my first comments were on the fall of PB&J.
Last night I went to Yia Yias's in Leawood. They just spent some money on an addition. While the chairs were in a little dis-repair, the service was great and the food was most tasty.

Although the first post still stands.
Recently there was an article in the Kansas City Star about PB&J's new restaurant called "Say Cheese" which features gourmet cheese sandwiches. I mean, come on, is that the best they can do? Grilled Cheese?
Wolfgang must be so proud of his protege.

Yes more Gmail

Coffee

Who here doesn't love coffee? Since no one has yet read this blog except for me...
Everyone here loves coffee.
My favorite in town is at Bar Roma next Waldeaux Wines and Spirits on Gregory.
He uses Danesi. Killer java. Rich, creamy and not bitter.
Behind that Dean and DeLucca has pretty tasty brew.
I made the mistake of stopping by Panera that other day because they have free wifi (huzzah!)
While the sandwiches are great, their coffee is lame.
Better however than their bagels and spread.
What's up with no smolked salmon? Anyway I ordered a bagel with a vegetable spread.
Yech, it tasted like weeds.

Sorry for the rant, must have more Danesi.

Matanzas Creek Syrah

I was at Ruth's Chris the other night and had a glass of Matanzas Creek Syrah. A bargain at $9 (for RC).
I thought there was only a few hundred cases of this wine made.
They must have a pretty savvy buyer to get their hands on this.
Man it was tasty! Dark, rich red, hints of cedar, blue and blackberry, good tannins.
I'll definitely go back for more.

What would a new blog be without a few free gmail accounts.
Do me a favor and post a comment on where you saw the notice as I have posted on a few websites.

Phonage

The gadget I guess that I am waiting for is the Treo 650.
Last year it was the Motorola V600.
What a bust that phone is!
I was excited about the camera, blue tooth form factor and size.
I guess I should have been more concerned about whether I could make a call.
I am on my 5th V600. I have had continuous problems with the phone re-booting.
Sometimes in the middle of a call, sometimes just on its own.
I did get to use a blackberry for a while, liked the email, but hated the phone.
Part of the problem was that I am with AT&T and their coverage is less than stellar.
Since they have been sold to Cingular, I do have better coverage.

The new Treo looks interesting though.
Nice form (relatively small).
Bright screen.
Seems to be a good all in one device.
Hopefully Cingular will release soon.

What Happened to PB&J in Kansas City?

Had lunch at Grand Street in Kansas City.
I used to love it.
The lobster martini app was $12 and served in a 3 oz martini glass.
Horrible perceived and real value!
No manager ever stopped by.
Manager miles used to be a trademark of theirs.

I talked with a few friends of mine and they all agree.
It seems the company just wants you in and out.
No building for the future.

Too bad.
